Meaning
Beneath the red rock a cross-shaped church rests deep in the earth, and the low prayers of white-robed pilgrims drift on and on.
Ethiopian Orthodox tradition holds that these churches were each hewn whole from the living rock in the 12th and 13th centuries; they remain a living sanctuary where pilgrimage and worship continue to this day.
