Meaning

Beside a white temple beneath snow-covered peaks, the newborn river beats jade-green against the rocks and rushes past with a roar.

Tradition holds that the long penance of King Bhagiratha drew the heavenly river Ganga down to earth, and that Shiva received her torrent in his matted hair to let her fall gently. Some kilometers above the temple, the river first emerges at Gaumukh, the snout of the glacier, and Gangotri is honored as one of the Char Dham shrines.
