“A cliff-top monastery reached only by a leather rope”
Scenes
Meaning
On a flat mountaintop ringed by sheer cliffs, where the only way up is a single leather rope hung down the rock, an ancient monastery rests close to the sky.
Ethiopian Orthodox tradition holds that Debre Damo was founded in the 6th century by Abuna Aregawi, one of the Nine Saints; set atop a sheer-sided amba reached only by a leather rope, it is understood to hold the oldest surviving church in Ethiopia, built in the Aksumite style.
