Meaning
Through the tamarisk shade the earth-colored river moves slowly, and pilgrims in white walk gently down into the water.
Tradition holds this as 'Bethany Beyond the Jordan,' where John the Baptist lived and baptized Jesus; Byzantine churches and baptismal pools still line the riverbank. Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2015, it remains a place where pilgrims step into the river's waters.
