Meaning

Climbing the sacred rock, six maidens (the Caryatids) bearing a roof upon their heads meet you in a silence two thousand years deep.

Tradition holds that this sacred rock was dedicated to Athena, guardian goddess of the city. At its summit the Parthenon, a temple to Athena Parthenos, together with the Erechtheion, whose porch is held up by six maiden statues, is counted among the crowning works of ancient Athenian civilization. A UNESCO World Heritage Site.
